Standing on the Shoulders of Giants
“The teachings flow from Eugene’s philosophical wisdom through Jeff’s kabuki-inspired artistry to Christian’s mission of making magic accessible to everyone.”
June 1, 1939 – August 8, 2017
A Yale Divinity graduate, philosopher, and one of the 100 most influential magicians of the 20th century, Eugene served as Dean of the Magic & Mystery School until his passing. He taught that magic is transformation — and that you are the agent of transformation in your own life.
His legacy: Author of The Performance of Close-Up Magic, The Experience of Magic, Strange Ceremonies, and Mystery School (co-authored with Jeff McBride).
Academy of Magical Arts Lecturer of the Year. Close-Up Magician of the Year. FISM Special Award for Magic Theory.
“His wisdom lives on in every student who learns that they are the magician in their own life.”
“Magnus.” World-renowned magician who revolutionized the art by combining masks, mime, kabuki theater, and world-class sleight of hand.
In 1991, Jeff established the McBride Magic & Mystery School in Las Vegas — named by the BBC as “the world’s most prestigious magic school.”
“I am a student of the Magic & Mystery School.
Eugene and Jeff didn’t teach me tricks. They taught me that magic is transformation. That I am the agent of change in my own life. That character matters more than technique. That theatricality is sacred. That teaching is how you pass the flame.
They taught me more than tricks. They taught me who I am.
Magic-Oid exists because of what they gave me. The wonder I try to share — that’s theirs. I’m just passing it on.”
