Learn the Art

Old Maurice's notes for the next generation. No methods exposed — just wisdom.

👁 The Art of Misdirection

"They see what you tell them to see." — Old Maurice

  • Time misdirection — The most powerful tool. The secret move happened 30 seconds ago.
  • Natural actions — Secret actions hidden inside normal ones. Picking up a glass. Adjusting a card.
  • Your eyes lead — Where you look, they look. Point with your gaze, not your finger.
  • Relaxation is invisible — Tension draws attention. The hand with the secret must be relaxed.
  • They remember your story — Not what actually happened. Script carefully.

🎭 Presentation & Performance

"Technique is 20%. Presentation is everything else." — Old Maurice

  • Every trick needs a story — Not just a method. Why are you doing this? What does the audience feel?
  • Talk to people, not at them — Conversation, not performance. Make them part of it.
  • Silence is a tool — The pause before the reveal. Let the moment breathe.
  • Personality over technique — A funny average magician beats a boring expert every time.
  • Read "Strong Magic" — Darwin Ortiz. The best book on magical presentation ever written.

🔒 The Sacred Rules

"Protect the art. It protected us." — Old Maurice

  • Methods are sacred — Never expose. Not to friends, not to family, not online. Ever.
  • Credit creators — Know who invented your material. Say their name.
  • Don't steal someone's special trick — If a magician is known for a trick, it's theirs. Find your own.
  • Support the community — Buy from magic shops. Pay creators. The magic world needs you.
  • Respect the audience — They're not marks. They're people who chose to watch you.

Common Questions

Old Maurice answers the ones he gets asked every week.

How do I get started in magic?
Start with one trick. Just one. Learn it until you can do it in your sleep, then perform it for someone. The buzz you get from that reaction is what hooks you. Get "Royal Road to Card Magic" or find a local magic club. And don't spend a fortune on props — a borrowed deck and someone willing to watch is all you need. Every great magician started exactly where you are now.
What's the best first trick to learn?
The Ambitious Card. It's beautiful, it's repeatable, and the reaction builds with each phase. Use a regular deck. No gimmicks needed for the basic version. It teaches you card control, how to talk while you perform, and how to handle a crowd — all in one trick. Dai Vernon fooled Houdini with it. If it's good enough for Vernon, it's good enough for you.
How much should I spend on my first props?
Less than you think. A deck of Bicycle cards costs a few quid. A close-up pad is under a tenner. Two books (Royal Road and Expert at the Card Table) will keep you busy for years. Don't buy the shiny expensive props until you can actually perform with the basics. I've seen blokes spend 500 quid at a convention and never perform a single trick.
Should I join the Magic Circle?
It's wonderful if you can, but it's not the only path. Local magic clubs are often more welcoming and easier to join. The Magic Circle has history and prestige, but magic is for everyone — not just members of one group. Find YOUR community. Could be a local club, an online group, or right here in the village. The best magician I ever knew never joined anything — he just performed every Friday at his local pub.
Where can I perform for the first time?
Family first. They're kind (mostly). Then friends. Then your local pub — ask the landlord if you can do a few tricks at the bar. Open mic magic nights exist in some cities. Magic club meetings are perfect — performing for other magicians is terrifying but teaches you fast. The key: just start. The first time is always scary. The second time is better. By the tenth, you're hooked.
How do I handle hecklers?
Most hecklers aren't being mean — they're trying to be part of the show. Notice them, include them, make them the star for a moment. "Ah, we've got a volunteer!" works wonders. For the genuinely nasty ones: stay calm, stay funny, and remember — the audience is on YOUR side. They came to watch magic, not someone being a knob. If it gets bad, just move on. Don't engage with it.
Is it OK to perform tricks I bought from a shop?
Absolutely. That's what they're made for. Buy them, learn them, perform them. Just don't expose the method, and ideally add your own presentation. The creator made it so you could perform it. Where it gets dodgy: performing the exact same routine as someone else, word for word. Add yourself to it. Make it yours.
How do I protect my methods from exposure?
Don't repeat tricks for the same audience. Don't tell anyone how it's done — not your partner, not your best mate, not the "one person who promises not to tell." Present the effect as magic, not as a puzzle to solve. And if someone says "I know how you did that" — smile and say "that's wonderful" and move on. They almost certainly don't know.
What makes a good close-up routine?
Three to five tricks, building in impact. Start friendly (card trick), build interest (coins), hit hard (impossible finale). Use everyday objects where possible — borrowed items feel more magical. Keep it under 10 minutes unless they're begging for more. And always leave them wanting more, never leave them wanting less. That's the hardest lesson.
Where do I find other magicians?
Right here in the village, for starters. Beyond that: local magic clubs (search your area), conventions (Blackpool is the big one in the UK), magic shops (the few that are left are full of amazing people), and online communities. The magic world is smaller than you think — once you're in, you're in. And magicians are the most generous people with their time and knowledge. Just ask.

Ask Old Maurice

The village wise man. Ask him anything about magic — history, collecting, performing, getting started.

🧙 Old Maurice is in the back room. Pull up a chair...
Now then, welcome to the village! I'm Old Maurice — been watching magic since before most of you lot were born. Ask me anything about the art, love. History, props, getting started, collecting — I've seen it all. Just don't ask me how a trick works. That's sacred, that is.
Methods are never discussed

The Code

All Welcome. Be Kind. Every background, every identity, every brain. We look after each other here. That's not optional.

Three Strikes. Hate, bullying, putting people down for who they are or how they're built — none of it flies. Warnings first. Then you're out.

NO Methods in Public. Ever. Master areas and invite-only hamlets only. We protect the art.

Honest Reviews. If it's rubbish, say so. Someone will still buy it — and they'll be happy because you were honest.

It's "Effects" Not "Tricks". And you 'ditch' something (get rid of it secretly), not 'drop' it. Unless it actually falls on the floor.

Common + Unity = Community

Did You Know?

🎩 The Magic Circle was founded in 1905. Their motto is Latin: "Indocilis Privata Loqui" — which means 'Not one to give away secrets.'

🃏 Dai Vernon fooled Houdini with the Ambitious Card. Multiple times. In one session.

✨ Making cards, coins, and balls appear and vanish with nothing but your hands is seen as the highest skill in magic. No trick props — just your hands.

🎭 Paul Daniels started performing at age 11 and turned pro in his 30s. There's no "too late".

Got a Noisy Brain?

This is for you if...

  • You call yourself "lazy" for sitting down
  • You feel like you have to please everyone, all the time
  • Your brain won't shut up, ever
  • You've been pretending to be 'normal' your whole life and you're exhausted
  • You think your brain might work differently but nobody ever told you

You might be ADHD, Autistic, or both. Many of us are. Found out late, worked it out yourself, or still not sure — it's all fine. You're welcome here.

This is a safe space to talk about magic AND how your brain works. No judgment. No pressure. You don't have to pretend here. Just people who get it.

Ask Doc. I got you.
